Webbing is gentler on fibreglass bow eyes and gelcoat than steel cable, making it the preferred choice for fibreglass and GRP boats. Replace webbing that is frayed, UV-degraded, mildewed or has cuts to the fibres — damaged webbing should not be used under load.

Webbing or cable for my boat?

Webbing if the hull is fibreglass. It will not bruise gelcoat around the bow eye, it lies flat on the drum without kinking, and it cannot drive a steel burr through your hand. Cable wins where grit and abrasion dominate, like sandy ramps and gravel yards.

How long does webbing last in the sun?

Less time than it looks. UV is what kills polyester — the fibres go chalky and lose strength while the strap still looks serviceable. Faded, stiff, fuzzy along the edges or nicked anywhere, replace it. Keeping it covered between trips slows the process considerably.

Can I fit webbing to a winch that came with cable?

Usually, as long as the drum slot or anchor will take a flat strap end and the flanges are deep enough. Webbing stacks faster than wire, so check the full 6 m does not pile over the flange edge before you commit — an overhanging wrap chafes and jams.
