How do I know the pawl needs replacing?

Listen and look. A healthy pawl clicks crisply over every tooth and springs back hard against the drum. If the click sounds dull, the tip is rounded or chipped, or it hesitates dropping in, it is finished. A pawl that skips under load lets a boat run back down a ramp.

Is the pawl really that critical?

On a ratchet winch it is the only thing holding the drum between strokes. Gears and drums wear out slowly and noisily; a pawl fails in an instant, under full load, usually with someone standing in line with the handle. Keep a spare in the trailer toolbox.

Will this kit suit my winch?

It covers a wide range of Jarrett hand winches, so most Jarrett drums are catered for. Pull the old pawl and spring out first and compare the pivot hole, tip shape and spring tension before fitting — a pawl sitting slightly proud or short is worse than the worn one.
