Do I need the heavier 5 mm?
Only if your drum is built for it and your loads justify it. Thicker cable eats drum space, so you fit fewer wraps and the layers build faster — which quietly reduces your pulling power. On a big trailer with a long run it makes sense; on a small drum it crowds the flanges.
Why a snap hook instead of an S hook?
It latches shut. An S hook relies on tension to stay where you put it, so slack line at the ramp or a bump on the highway can flick it off the bow eye. The snap hook's gate closes behind the eye and stays connected when the line goes loose.
Can I fit longer cable to any winch?
Not blindly. The extra length has to stack between the drum flanges without piling over the edge, and every additional layer cuts pulling power and raises effort at the handle. Check what your drum holds before upsizing, and make sure the end anchor is properly clamped.
