Common questions about Eberspacher Hydronic D5E Diesel Water Heater Kit - HS3
How is this different from a diesel air heater?
An air heater blows hot air down a duct. This one heats liquid and pumps it around a loop, so you get cabin heat through heat exchangers and domestic hot water off the same burner. More plumbing to install, but far better heat spread through a long van and no roaring vent.
Is 5 kW overkill for a small camper?
Probably. 5 kW suits a big caravan, a motorhome or a bus where you are heating a long body and a water tank at once. In a small van it will spend its life cycling, and you are carrying a 3.8 kg burner plus pump, pipework and a coolant loop for nothing.
Can I leave it on standby all season?
Yes. Standby is 1 W, which is nothing against a house battery, so it can sit armed and ready to fire on the controller or a timer. What you should not do is leave the diesel tank low. Running it dry means bleeding the fuel line before it will light again.
