Overview
The Dometic RUC 8408X is a full-height, narrow-cabinet compressor fridge-freezer purpose-built for caravan and motorhome installations, delivering 170 litres of refrigerator space and a dedicated 46-litre freezer compartment in a 550 mm-wide footprint slim enough to pass through a standard caravan entrance door. Operating on 12V DC, 24V DC, or 240V AC with automatic source switching, it draws just 3.0 Ah per hour at 12V — genuinely viable for off-grid solar setups.
The T-rated cooling system maintains performance across the full range of Australian ambient temperatures. A TFT colour touchscreen with rotary control lets you set independent fridge and freezer temperatures and choose between Performance, Silent, and Power-Save modes. R134a refrigerant and a hermetically sealed compressor mean zero servicing of the cooling circuit for the life of the 3-year warranty.
Common questions
Can my solar setup actually run it off-grid?
Work on 3.0 amp-hours per hour average at 32°C ambient and size your battery bank and panels from there. It is a steady, predictable draw rather than a spiky one, which suits lithium and a decent regulator. Shaded camps and cloudy runs are what catch people out, not the fridge.
Is 47 dB(A) quiet enough to sleep next to?
For most people, yes. It is a background hum rather than a rattle, and the Silent mode trims it further when the van is closed up. Light sleepers in a small pop-top will still hear the compressor cycle. A soft-floor camper or open plan van barely notices it.
Will the freezer hold ice cream or just keep things frozen?
It holds between -20°C and -10°C, so ice cream sets hard at the bottom of that range and stays scoopable near the top. The 46 litre compartment is a genuine freezer, not a frozen-food box, which is the difference between a week of meat and a couple of days.
