Through the stainless eyelets, into the corners first and then the windward side. Sand pegs hold better than the thin wire ones in soft ground, and a mat that lifts at one corner will fold itself over the chairs within a minute. On concrete, weight the edges instead.
Think clean surface, not cushioning. The weave is thin and non-slip, so it keeps grass seeds and mud off your feet and gives chairs something level to sit on, but it will not soften a rocky site. If the ground is sharp, sweep the stones out before you roll it out.
At 4kg it is easy to justify, and it packs into a bag rather than a box. The thing to watch is that mats breed. One for the awning, one for the door, one for the annexe, and suddenly the boot is full. Pick the size that matches your van and stop there.
