Is the bigger mat overkill for my setup?

If your van is under 18ft, yes. This one is proportioned for 18ft to 21ft dual-axle vans. On a shorter van you end up with mat sticking out well past the awning line, collecting rain and leaf litter, and 5kg of soggy mat is miserable to roll up.

How do I clean it?

Shake it, brush it or hose it, and that is genuinely all. The permeable weave drains instead of holding water, so it dries fast enough to pack the same morning. Rolling one up wet and leaving it in the bag for a fortnight is how mats start to smell.

Where do these mats usually fail?

At the edges and the peg points, which is why the double-stitched binding and stainless eyelets matter more than the pattern you pick. Always peg through an eyelet. Driving a peg straight through the weave starts a run that widens every windy night you camp.
