Do I need the 6m or the smaller size?

Go 6m if your van is over 21ft, or if you want room for chairs and a table beyond the awning line. At 14.4m² it covers a big footprint, which is generous at a quiet site and more than you can peg out neatly on a cramped one.

Is a bigger mat a pain to pack up?

It is bulkier than you think. Folded, 14.4m² of matting takes real space in a boot, and at 6kg you notice it when you are loading. Shake it out and let it dry before it goes in the bag or it will smell by the next trip.

Does the dirt really fall through?

It does, and that is the point of over 2500 holes per square metre — sand and crumbs drop through instead of collecting underfoot. What it will not do is keep your feet dry in heavy rain, since water goes straight through as well.
