What separates this from a basic cover?

The top panel. It uses Olefin HD fabric where the sun and water do their worst, with four layers of polypropylene down the sides. Add the reinforced corners and the cinching system and it targets exactly the spots that give out first on a basic cover: corners, roof and hems.

Do the air vents actually do anything?

Yes, and they are why it can sit on a van through a season. The vents let the moisture a van gives off escape instead of condensing under the fabric and growing mould across your roof. A sealed cover with nowhere for vapour to go creates a worse problem than it solves.

Can I get into the van without taking it off?

Yes. The passenger-side zipper doors open for access, and the eyelets in the door hem let you prop the flap out as a small sun awning while you work. Fit the cover so those doors line up with your van's door, and check it before the buckles go on.
