Will it take fat tyres?

Up to roughly 8.5 cm, which covers most mountain bike and plus-size rubber but stops short of a true fat bike. Measure the widest tyre in the family before you commit. A tyre that will not drop into the slot leaves the bike leaning on its neighbour, and that is how paint gets scratched.

Does a row of 5 bikes need much room?

Less than you would expect, which is the whole idea. Five bikes stand upright in roughly the floor space of one lying down. What it does need is clearance either side for handlebars and pedals, so measure the width of your spot rather than just the length of the rack.

How does it stop the bikes scratching each other?

Angled slots hold each wheel upright and spaced apart so frames and bars are not resting on one another. It works as long as you turn every second bike around when the bars are wide. Jam them all in facing the same way and the grips will still touch.
