As a rule of thumb, go one person above your actual group size. A tent listed as "6-person" is genuinely comfortable for four adults with gear, not six. For a family of five, look at an 8-person model. Equally important is peak height — a tent you can stand up in makes dressing, packing, and early-morning routines far less frustrating. Check floor dimensions carefully: a large quoted capacity in a low-roof tunnel tent gives very different usable space than a tall cabin-style design with the same person rating.

Dome tents are freestanding — the poles form a self-supporting structure without staking — making them easy to pitch solo and stable in wind. They're a great all-round choice. Tunnel tents are longer and narrower with parallel hoop poles; they're not freestanding but maximise internal space and often include separate sleeping rooms and a covered living area. For car-camping families who want room to move around, a multi-room tunnel or semi-geodesic design is usually worth the slightly longer pitch time.

Hydrostatic head (HH) measures how much water pressure the fabric withstands before leaking. For Australian conditions — where a summer storm can arrive with little warning — look for at least 3,000mm HH on the flysheet and 6,000mm on the groundsheet (the ground exerts more pressure from body weight). Budget tents often rate at 1,500–2,000mm, which will let through water in a sustained downpour. Heat and insects are your main challenges in an Australian summer. Look for: full mesh inner panels that allow airflow while keeping bugs out; a flysheet that extends close to the ground but still vents through adjustable panels; a large covered porch for shade; and UV-resistant fabric — many budget tents fade quickly in Australian sun. Condensation forms when warm, moist air from breathing hits the cooler tent fabric — it's normal, not a sign of a leaky tent. To minimise it: pitch the inner tent with the flysheet creating an airspace between both layers; open vents slightly even in cool weather; avoid cooking inside the tent; and choose a campsite with airflow rather than a low-lying hollow. Never pack a tent away wet — mould and mildew will destroy the fabric and waterproof coating. If you can't dry it in the field, hang it at home as soon as you return. Clean mud and debris with a soft cloth and mild soap — never use detergent or machine wash. Check poles for cracks and repair any kinks before storage. Re-seam-seal the floor and fly once a year if you camp regularly. Store the tent loosely rather than tightly stuffed in its stuff sack — repeated compression damages the waterproof coating over time.
