Australia has some of the world's best multi-day hiking trails — coastal cliffs, world heritage sand islands, alpine wilderness, and ancient ranges. The trick is picking one that matches your fitness, your time, and the season.
Here are five Aussie classics, all of which can be done as proper end-to-end multi-day expeditions OR cherry-picked for shorter day-walks.

Distance: ~100km · Time: 5-8 days end-to-end · Difficulty: easy to moderate
The Great Ocean Road's better-known sibling — same coastline, no traffic. From Apollo Bay west to within sight of the Twelve Apostles. Cliff-top vantage points, hidden coves, Otway rainforest sections, beach walks at low tide.
Even one day walking the cliff-top section feels significant. The full multi-day is one of the great Aussie walks.
Distance: ~8km · Time: 3-4 hours one way · Difficulty: easy to moderate
The day-walking gem of NSW Central Coast. Bouddi National Park's coastal track from Putty Beach to MacMasters Beach, with Gerrin Point lookout (1km from Putty Beach) being the standout — panoramic views over Maitland Bay and Bouddi Marine Park.
Easy access from Sydney (1.5 hours) makes this the perfect weekend introduction to coastal walking.

Distance: 90km · Time: 6-8 days · Difficulty: easy to challenging in places
Walk the world's largest sand island. Soft sand underfoot most of the way, with surprisingly varied scenery — perched freshwater lakes, ancient rainforest growing in pure sand, multi-coloured sand dunes, the famous Indian Head and Sandy Cape.
Can be split into shorter sections if multi-day backpacking isn't your thing — the island's 4WD-friendly so 4WD camp + day walks combo works well.
Distance: 1,200km · Time: 60+ days end-to-end (most do sections) · Difficulty: easy to challenging
One of the world's great long-distance walks. Cape Jervis on the south coast all the way to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges. Coastal sections, Adelaide Hills wineries, Barossa Valley, and the spectacular outback ranges of the Flinders.

Distance: 65km (82km with Lake St Clair extension) · Time: 5-9 days · Difficulty: moderate to challenging
Australia's most famous multi-day walk. Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, through Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Sub-alpine moors, ancient rainforest, glacial valleys, alpine meadows. Bookings required (limited numbers).

Most multi-day hikes start or end near a town with caravan parks or bush camps. Browse our Campsite Explorer to find pre- and post-hike campsites.
For first-timers: Bouddi (NSW) day-walk to test if you like it, Wilsons Promontory Circuit (VIC) for a multi-day, then graduate to the Overland or Great Ocean Walk. The Heysen and Larapinta are once-in-a-lifetime trips that need real prep.
Get good boots, a proper pack, and start training. The trail will reward you.
