Why are these sold individually?
Because tie-down jobs are rarely symmetrical. A kayak wants a pair, a trailer load might want an odd number, and a bow line is a single strap on its own. Buying one at a time means you end up with exactly what your rack uses rather than guessing.
When do I need the longer length?
When the strap has to go right around something — over the roof and through the door openings, around a trailer frame, or over a tall load on a rack. Short straps run out fast once you allow for the buckle and a tail you can actually grip.
Why do my straps hum on the highway?
It is the flat webbing fluttering in the airflow, not the buckle. Put a half twist into the run between the anchor and the load and the noise stops. Then roll the tail and tie it off so it is not beating against paintwork or hanging near the exhaust.
