Measure the hole in the roof, not the old hatch flange over it. A 400 x 400mm cut-out is the common size in Australian vans, but plenty of older roofs were cut a little out of square. Then measure the roof sandwich thickness, because that decides which adapter you need.
In hail country, yes. Acrylic goes brittle with age and lets go in a stone or hailstone strike; polycarbonate flexes and takes the hit. The trade-off is a softer surface that marks easily, so clean it with water and a soft cloth and keep solvents and scourers well away.
Park it closed. A lifting lid at highway speed loads the hinge in a way it was never meant to take, and the same goes for a gusty afternoon at camp. It is a parked-up ventilator. In rain, even the smallest position lets water track in on a flat roof.
