Is a gas horn enough to meet AMSA requirements?
A sound signal is required safety gear on Australian vessels, and this covers that role. What varies is the rest of your kit by waters and vessel type, so check the list for where you operate. Carrying the horn and it being flat are different things.
Gas horn or a whistle?
Carry both if you can. A whistle never runs out and works soaked, but it will not cut through a planing hull, wind and breaking water. The gas horn does, which is why it gets heard by a vessel bearing down on you.
Should I test it before every trip?
A short press at the start of the season and a heft of the canister beats a long test blast every time you launch. Gas horns fail by going flat unnoticed, so keep a refill canister aboard and know which locker it lives in.
