Is a combination light legal on my boat?
Only if your vessel sits under 7 metres. That is the length where a single combined unit is accepted rather than separate port and starboard lanterns spaced apart on the gunwales. Check your own hull length and your state maritime rules before you drill the bow.
Is this the only light I need?
No. A combination unit gives you the red and green you show when underway, but you still need an all-round white aft so you are visible from behind and at anchor. Sidelights alone leave you dark to anything coming up your stern.
Will it survive on a bow that gets wet?
The housing handles spray, but the failure point on small boat nav lights is almost always the wiring behind it. Seal the terminals, use heatshrink over the joins and give the connections a shot of corrosion spray each season. That is what kills these, not the lens.
