Is 15 m too much cable for a boat trailer?
For a typical trailer, yes. That much heavy steel is a lot of line to stack on a small drum, and most of it would never leave the barrel. This length is aimed at commercial winches, building hoists and long-run material handling where the reach is genuinely needed.
Does heavier cable make my winch stronger?
No. The gears, drum and pawl set the limit, and none of them change because you fitted thicker line. What you gain is abrasion resistance and margin in the cable itself. Size the job to the winch's rating, not to whatever rope happens to be on it.
How should I store it between jobs?
Wound on under light tension, never thrown in a heap. Loose coils of steel cable kink, and a kinked strand never recovers. Rinse the salt off, let it dry properly, then wipe a light film of grease along the lay before it sits unused for months.
