Common questions about Grabber-MPI Emergency Signal Mirror
How do you aim a signal mirror at an aircraft?
Through the retroreflective sight. You hold the mirror near your eye, find the bright spot in the aiming device, and walk that spot onto the target. Without a sight you are waving reflected light around and hoping, which rarely finds a moving aircraft.
Is a mirror still worth carrying if I have a PLB?
Yes, as the backup that cannot go flat. A beacon tells searchers roughly where you are; a mirror is what puts you in the pilot's eye once they are overhead. It weighs nothing, needs no battery and works when everything electronic has drowned.
Does the 16km figure hold up in real conditions?
That is a clear-day, good-sun number. Overcast, haze, smoke or low sun angle cut it sharply, and at dawn or dusk it does nothing at all. Treat it as a daytime tool and carry a strobe or a light for the hours it cannot work.
