Most Sydneysiders drive past it to Byron or the Hunter — which is excellent, because it leaves the Central Coast 40% emptier than it should be. Bouddi National Park — the icon Bouddi NP, on the southern Central Coast (Killcare to MacMasters Beach area), is one of the most beautiful coastal national parks within easy reach of Sydney. Three NPWS-managed campgrounds, all walk-in or short-drive access: Putty Beach Campground — the easiest. Drive-in, 60 sites, walking distance to Putty Beach (sand + small surf). Toilets, picnic tables, NO showers. Tent + small camper trailer only — no caravans. ~$30-45/night per site, book via NPWS. Little Beach Campground — small (12 sites), 200m walk from car park, set in coastal heathland. Quieter, more "wilderness" feel. Same fees + booking process. Tallow Beach Campground (Bouddi NP) — north of Putty, smaller still (8 sites), pit toilet only, 4WD-style track. Most secluded. Perfect for self-contained tent camping. The Bouddi Coastal Walk connects Putty Beach → Maitland Bay → Little Beach → Bombi Point — 8.5km one-way of stunning headland + beach walking. Whales June-October from the headlands. Day-walk it from Putty Beach campground; come back, swim off the campsite beach, dinner at Killcare's Bombini café 5 min drive. Booking via NPWS: Bouddi camps book via the NSW NPWS portal (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au). Open 6 months in advance + sell out fast for school holidays + summer weekends. Mid-week off-peak: usually available 1-2 weeks notice. Bring your own everything — these are minimal-facility camps. 2. Munmorah State Conservation Area — the underrated one Munmorah SCA, between The Entrance + Catherine Hill Bay, is the best Central Coast option you've never heard of. Three NPWS campgrounds, drive-in, mix of beach + lake + bush camping: Frazer Beach Campground — beach-front bushland, 36 sites mix of tent + camper trailer + caravan, drive-in. Walking distance to surf beach. Toilet + cold shower facilities. ~$30-50/night. Birdie Beach Campground — south of Frazer, smaller (24 sites), similar facilities, slightly quieter. Beautiful surf beach, popular with surfers. Norah Head + Soldiers Beach (private + council parks nearby for caravans) — for those wanting more facilities/cabins. Why Munmorah is brilliant: drive-in (no walk-in slog), real beach access (10m from the dunes), proper toilets + cold showers, dog-friendly leash zones nearby, fishing + surfing right there. Books out fast for summer school holidays but mid-week off-peak is usually available within a week. What to bring: tent or small camper trailer + everything self-contained. Lake + caravan parks — the family / accessible option If you want hot showers, swimming pools + powered sites with caravan + cabin options, the Tuggerah/Wyong/The Entrance corridor has plenty: Tuggerah Lakes Holiday Park (The Entrance) — multiple Reflections Holiday Park locations on Tuggerah Lake. Powered sites, cabins, water access. Family-friendly. Short walk to surf beach. ~$50-100 site, $150-280 cabin. Toowoon Bay Holiday Park — beach-front; Reflections-managed; popular with families. Sheltered beach + caravan park feel. Norah Head Holiday Park — heritage lighthouse area, beach-front sites, family-focused. ~$60-100 site. Patonga Beach (Hawkesbury entrance) — Patonga Beach Caravan Park. Quieter than the main coast, ferry to Palm Beach + The Entrance. Lovely village feel. NRMA Sydney Lakeside (Lake Munmorah) — well-equipped resort caravan park, swimming pool, kids' activities. Higher end of pricing but good for kids. The trade-off: caravan parks $60-110/night (peak much higher); NPWS bush camps $30-50. Caravan parks for full facilities + family ease. Maitland Bay swimming hole at halfway. Whales in season. Norah Head Lighthouse — historic 1903 lighthouse, free outside grounds, $20 lighthouse tour. Whale watching platform. Wyrrabalong NP coastal walk — north of The Entrance, 6km return clifftop walk; coastal heath wildflowers in spring. Brisbane Water NP (south of Bouddi) — Aboriginal rock engravings + bushwalking; less famous than Bouddi but spectacular. The Entrance pelican feeding — daily 3.30pm at Memorial Park; touristy but kids love it. Free. Pearl Beach + Patonga ferry — small village beaches, lovely for a quiet day. Ferry to Palm Beach (north Sydney) is a great half-day adventure. Catherine Hill Bay (1930s coal-mining village) — heritage village, beautiful headland walk, surfers' beach. Photogenic + uncrowded. Bouddi NP Maitland Bay shipwreck — at low tide, walk to the SS Maitland wreck (1898). Tide times matter. 5. When to go (when to avoid) Best: March-May + September-November. Warm but not humid; surf consistent; mid-week mostly empty NPWS camps. Good: June-August (whale season). Cooler; quieter; perfect for hiking the Bouddi Coastal Walk; whales offshore. Avoid (crowds): Christmas-New Year + Easter — booked 6 months ahead; school holidays similar. Mixed: January — spectacular weather but packed. Storm risk: Late summer (Feb-March) can bring east coast lows. Bouddi exposed to easterly weather. Pack proper rain shelter. The day-trip-from-Sydney mindset works for some Central Coast spots (Patonga, Pearl Beach, The Entrance) but you'll regret it for Bouddi — that needs a 2-3 night stay to do the walks + actually relax. 6.
