Will it keep us awake?
Under 40 dB(A) is quiet enough to sleep through — what you hear is air moving through the ducts rather than the burner. The fan is loudest on start-up from cold, then drops back once the van is at temperature. Duct outlets away from the bed head help.
How long will a gas bottle last running this?
At full output it burns around 310 g/h, but it only runs flat out while the van is warming up. Once the thermostat is satisfied the burner cycles down, so a night of heating uses far less gas than that figure suggests. Cold, poorly insulated vans use the most.
What happens if the house battery goes flat?
No heat. The control panel and the fan run on 12V even when you are burning gas, so a dead battery means a cold van regardless of how full your bottles are. It is the one dependency people forget when they are camped off grid in winter.
