Frank Marine
Sand, mud and weed, which covers most of what you will anchor over around the Australian coast. A claw sets quickly and resets itself if the boat swings with the tide, which is the main reason people run them on trailer boats.
No anchor holds on its own. You need a length of chain between anchor and rope so the pull comes in flat along the bottom rather than lifting the shank, plus enough rode out for the depth. Skimp on chain and a good anchor will drag.
It lasts for years if you look after it, and it wears where the anchor drags across rock and shell. Rinse the anchor and chain in fresh water after a salt trip, and expect the coating to go patchy at the fluke tips first.
