Common questions about Coast RV 50mm Rise Ball Mount Tow Hitch Shank
Who actually needs a rise rather than a drop?
Vehicles with a low-slung tow bar towing something with a tall coupler, which usually means a wagon or ute that has not been lifted pulling a van or horse float built high for clearance. If your car is lifted, you almost certainly want the drop version instead.
Does raising the ball affect my safety chains?
Raising the ball lifts the coupler, and your safety chains ride with it. That is usually a good thing, because chains that drag on the bitumen wear through and fail the roadside check. After fitting, hitch up and look at the chain sag before you head off, not after.
Will it rattle in the receiver?
Some. A 50mm square receiver is made with clearance so the shank slides in, and that clearance becomes a clunk every time you brake or take up drive. The supplied pin and R-clip hold it safely, they just do not hold it tightly. An anti-rattle wedge sorts the noise.
