How many people does a 6 quart oven really feed?

A small group for a stew, fewer again if you are doing a roast with vegetables packed around it. The 5.7 litre capacity fills faster than the number suggests, once you leave headroom for the lid to seal and for bubbling. For a crowd, two smaller ovens beat one huge one.

Is 5.4 kg too heavy for touring?

Heavy for a walker, unremarkable for a 4WD or a van. That mass is the whole point, because cast iron holds a steady temperature over uneven coals in a way thin steel never manages. Pack it low in a drawer or a crate, since 5.4 kg sliding around does damage.

What is the thermometer notch actually for?

Reading the inside without lifting the lid. Every lift dumps heat and drops ash into your food, and with coals stacked on a domed lid it becomes a two-handed job. Slide a probe through the notch instead and you can watch a roast climb without breaking the seal.
