How heavy a lid does 700N actually suit?
The big stuff — a full canopy lid, a large boat cover, a tunnel boot door with a spare wheel hanging off it. If a lid takes real effort to hold up with one hand, this is the range you are in. On anything lighter it will slam the lid open.
Can I fit one of these on my own?
Get a hand. Compressing a strut this strong to line up the end fitting takes real force, and it will jump out of your grip and mark the paint if you slip. With someone holding the lid at the right angle it is a few minutes of work.
Will this much force damage my hatch?
It can, if the lid is not up to it. High force puts load through the hinges and the panel every time the lid opens. Check the hinge mounts are solid and spread the load with a backing plate if they are screwed into thin ply or foam sandwich.
