When the load runs in one direction along the shackle and nothing else is sharing the pin. The narrow body keeps everything in line and resists twisting, which is why it suits chain, a single strop or a rigging termination. Add a second line and you want a bow.
A screw pin will back out under vibration or a rolling load, and that is how shackles disappear overboard. On anything left set up, mouse the pin with stainless seizing wire, or step up to a captive bolt version. Finger tight then a nudge is the right feel.
Anti-seize or lanolin on the thread when you assemble it, and never wind it up with a spanner for the sake of it. Stainless galls when threads are driven hard, and a galled pin means cutting the shackle off. Snug by hand is enough for the loads this handles.
