GENUX
This is a single stick, and one is enough for balance on a track, crossing a creek or steadying a step down. If you are carrying a heavy pack down a long descent, two poles share the load across both arms and save your knees. Decide on the terrain, not the walk.
Stand on flat ground with the tip beside your boot and set it so your elbow makes a right angle. Then adjust as you go — shorten it a little for climbing so you are not reaching up, lengthen it for descents so you are not stooping over the grip.
On dry rock, gravel and hard dirt it holds well and the shock absorbing tip takes the jar out of each step. Wet sloping stone is where any rubber tip loses its nerve, so plant it deliberately and do not throw your weight onto it on slick surfaces.
