Does this replace a personal locator beacon?

No, and nothing in the box pretends to. A whistle, a mirror and a fire only work if somebody is already close enough to see or hear you. If you travel remote, carry a beacon for the call for help and treat this kit as what keeps you going while you wait.

What is worth practising before a trip?

The fire starter. A flint rod works in wind and wet, which is exactly when you need it, but it takes a technique nobody has on the first attempt. Strike it a few times in the backyard with dry tinder so you are not learning the skill cold, tired and in the dark.

Where should it live in the rig?
