Reach. A long dee lets the pin pass through a thick lug, a doubled strap or a stack of fittings that a standard dee will not span, and it gives a line somewhere to sit clear of the pin. Useful on anchor swivels and awning tensioners.
In line with the pull, no, because the load runs along the legs. Off axis it is a different story: the extra length gives a side load more leverage to bend the body. Keep the pull straight through the shackle and the length makes no difference.
The jaw opening and pin are what decide that, not the length, so a long dee generally drops into the same holes. What changes is the space it needs behind. On a crowded bow roller or a tight tang, check the shackle can lie straight before committing.
