About this campsite

The Calliope River Rest Area Southside offers a prime natural retreat for adventurers and casual travelers. It provides ample space for camping and is located close to the river bank for convenient boating and fishing. However, campers must be aware of potential flooding during heavy rains. On the other side, the Northside, equipped with toilets, provides a greener and more organized camping experience. Both sides offer unique atmospheric experiences for all types of campers.

Calliope River Rest Area is a vast overnight camping site located along the beautiful and serene Calliope River bank. It is renowned for its generous spaces suitable for all types of camping rigs, providing an authentic countryside camping experience for a maximum of 48 hours. With its distinctive appeal, Calliope River Rest Area tempts visitors with a variety of potential camping spots. On the south bank, the location offers a unique bush-camping experience. However, it's important to note that there are no amenities here and it could be prone to flooding and erosion during periods of significant rainfall. On the other hand, the north bank offers a well-groomed, shade-rich area complete with toilet facilities and the safety of a higher river bank. While the majority of the site is covered by dirt or gravel, you will find bits of grassy patches here and there. For boating and fishing enthusiasts, the south bank provides better access to the river, but those in search of more green space may prefer the popularity of the north bank. Indeed, Calliope River Rest Area merges the perfect blend of ruggedness, tranquility, and convenience for an unforgettable camping retreat.

How to Get There

From Bruce Highway turn into Old Bruce Highway at waypoint and follow for approx 5km to Calliope River Rest Area – Southside. Road leading into the rest area is narrow bitumen but roads/tracks in the rest area itself are rough and unsealed. Not recommended in wet weather. Google maps shows the bridge on Old Bruce Highway. Note the bridge has been closed to traffic for quite some time. So by road the South & North sides are some 8Km appart.
