About this rest area

Shell Beach, located in L’Haridon Bight of Shark Bay, is an extraordinary stretch of beach covered in billions of tiny Cardiid Cockle shells up to 10 meters deep. This specific type of bivalve shellfish thrives in the hypersalinated waters where its typical predators cannot, leading to a beautiful accumulation of these shells along the shore. Historically, these abundant shells were even used as building materials. The shimmering white shoreline against the blue ocean creates a breath-taking backdrop, making Shell Beach a unique and must-visit destination.

Shell Beach, located in Shark Bay's L’Haridon Bight, is a unique 60km stretch of coastline densely packed with millions of tiny white coquina bivalve shells. This stunning site showcases a natural phenomenon that is due to the exceptionally high salinity levels of the local waters. The Cardiid Cockle, which thrives in these hypersaline conditions, faces minimal risk from predators who struggle in this environment, leading to an overwhelming abundance of these tiny shells. This strikingly beautiful, snow-white beach perfectly contrasts the surrounding vibrant blue waters, creating a truly captivating and rare sight. Situated 45km south of Denham Township on the western side of the peninsula, the shells have been washing ashore for thousands of years, culminating in a significant depth of 7-10 meters. Historically, the shells had been used as building materials, fashioned into blocks in a manner similar to modern-day cement blocks. Shell Beach remains an iconic location that seamlessly blends natural history and raw beauty.
