About this rest area

Diamantina River's landscape features floodplains, braided channels and waterholes lined with diverse foliage including coolibahs and river red gums. Its surroundings encompass large gibber plains and grasslands predominantly covered by Mitchell grass. In contrast, the south-west region reveals sandhills and claypans dominated by cane grass communities. Central areas showcase shrubland and grassland communities on limestone ranges, harboring rare species like rock fuchsia bush and gypsum bush. A variety of trees like the lancewood and Normanton box can also be found here, enriching the area's biodiversity.

The floodplains, braided channels and waterholes of the Diamantina River and its tributaries are lined with coolibahs, river red gums, lignum, blue bushes and grasses. Beyond the river flats are vast gibber plains and deep, cracking clay soils supporting grasslands dominated by Mitchell grass. In the south-west, sandhills and claypans are dominated by cane grass communities, while stark limestone ranges in the park's centre support shrubland and grassland communities that are rare in the region. Two rare Eremophila species—rock fuchsia bush and gypsum bush—are found in the park. To date, the gypsum bush has been recorded in only 10 locations on and around Diamantina. Trees such as lancewood, mountain yapunyah, Normanton box, red mallee and myall, although more typically found in greater numbers in other climatic regions, are also found here.

Shell Beach

Shell Beach, located in L’Haridon Bight of Shark Bay, is an extraordinary stretch of beach covered in billions of tiny Cardiid Cockle shells up to 10 meters deep. This specific type of bivalve shellfish thrives in the hypersalinated waters where its typical predators cannot, leading to a beautiful accumulation of these shells along the shore. Historically, these abundant shells were even used as building materials. The shimmering white shoreline against the blue ocean creates a breath-taking backdrop, making Shell Beach a unique and must-visit destination.
