Previously a free conservation campsite popular with kayakers and river enthusiasts, it sustained significant flood damage during Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 and remains closed. The damaged toilet facilities have been removed. The site's riverside location made it a favoured stop along what is considered an outstanding North Island river journey.
