About this campsite
Baralaba has seen its share of ups and downs. Swings in the economy of the area have alternated, with droughts, floods, depression, and strikes. Yet the tough times have helped Baralaba develop a resilience and means of coping with adversity. Working together has kept stability in the town and district and maintained the old values and friendliness offered to all comers. Learn more here The Neville Hewitt Weir was completed in 1976 and has totally changed the way the river is used. In addition to suppling water to Baralaba and nearby Woorabinda, irrigation for hay and grain crops and cotton production, as well as fruit and vegetable farming, has brought prosperity to the area. It has also opened up the southern end of the town as a wonderful recreation playground which covers swimming, fishing, camping, skiing and boating. There is a concrete boat ramp and a well-established picnic area, with toilets, showers and barbecues. Coal mining featured in the early history of the town and was responsible for bringing the railway to the district. The mines are closed now, but The Baralaba Coal Mine is owned and operated by Cockatoo Coal producing PCI (Pulverised Coal Injection) and thermal coal products for international customers.
