About
Largely an agricultural region with wheat, canola and other grains making up much of the output. The rich cold waters of Antarctica provide the region with abundant seafood and it boasts a significant fishing industry. Tuna is an important species here and tuna farming is also growing in output. Port Lincoln is the hub of tuna fishing.Ceduna is the gateway to the west and the Nullarbor crossing. In the early days of satellite communications, it was one of only a couple of land stations in Australia, which sent and received signals to and from the satellites.
The Eyre Peninsula is remote and isolated from the main population centres in the nation and has kept is clean environmental status. Low population levels mean low levels of pollution. This gives it a unique place in food production and tourism.
The area is not completely devoid of heavy industry however, with iron ore mining at Iron Knob and shipbuilding at Whyalla.
