Overview

Whetstone Horse Camp is located in the Andrew Pickens Ranger District in Oconee County in the western corner of South Carolina, about 13 miles northwest of Walhalla. The Chattooga River flows nearby. With over 30 miles of horseback riding trails, Whetstone serves as a base for those who like to ride and camp.

Recreation

The Rocky Gap Trail on the South Carolina side of the river and the Willis Knob Horse Trail on the Georgia side provide excellent horseback riding and hiking opportunities. Visitors also enjoy exploring the nearby Chattooga River.

Facilities

The campground is open year-round and has 18 sites with parking spurs for horse trailers. All of the 18 Sites are by reservation only.

Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and lantern post. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Hitching racks are located throughout the facility.

Natural Features

The camp is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the Rocky Gap and Willis Knob Horse Trails.

The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests encompass more than 629,000 acres in four districts throughout South Carolina, from the lowcountry Atlantic Coast to the western foothills along the Georgia border.

The town of Walhalla is 13 miles away. The town holds an annual Oktoberfest celebration the third weekend of October.

Stumphouse Tunnel, a 19-century uncompleted railroad tunnel, and Isaqueena Falls make for interesting visits. Both are located just 20 minutes from the camp.

Overview Located in the northern Georgia mountains, far from civilization, Willis Knob Horse Campground is one of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests most beloved horse-lover hideaways. The campground features equestrian camping, riding and hiking trails and fishing in the nearby Chattooga River. Recreation The 15-mile Willis Knob Trail in Georgia and 12.5 mile Rocky Gap Trail in South Carolina provide some of the most scenic horseback riding and hiking in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Winding across deeply dissected ridges, the trails descend into the vast Chattooga River. The 10.7-mile Chattooga River Trail and the 37-mile Bartram Trail are also accessible nearby and are for hiking only. Fishing is available in the Chattooga River. Facilities The campground provides single, double and group campsites for tent and RV camping. There are water and electric hookups at each of the horse campsites, along with tables, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are also provided. Sorry there is no dump station. The closest one is at Black Rock State Park in Mountain City, GA. Hitching highlines and a horse watering station are available. Campers are required to clean up after their horses using trailers provided on-site for manure only. Overview Extending the same primitive feel as its neighboring West Fork Campground and the Chattooga River, Sarah's Creek 22-site developed campground offers a tranquil escape, a place to relax, and perhaps a chance to throw in a line to catch a few fish. Recreation Sarah's Creek Campground is in another unique area in the Chattahoochee National Forest. You can enjoy walking along the number of creeks or the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. If some water activities are on your mind the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River has fishing, whitewater rafting, canoe, and kayak possibilities with outfitter and guide services available if you enjoy your time on the river. Tallulah Gorge State Park and historic Lakemont are also a close drive. If a hike is what you desire, take a short drive along the Warwoman Road and find yourself at many trailheads all depending on what type and how long you want your hiking adventure to be. Along with the beautiful Wild and Scenic River at the back door, the area has many hiking trails nearby. Bartram Trail, Chattooga River Trail, 3-Forks Trail, and Holcomb Creek Trail are all in the area, along with a host of waterfalls, and views abound. The state-managed Warwoman Wildlife Management Area is just a few miles to the west and to the northwest of this campground is Rabun Bald the second-highest peak in the State of Georgia at 4696' above sea level. Darnell Creek Horse Trail is located west of the campground with the Warwoman Wildlife Management area for horse and mountain bike riding. Facilities Each of the 22 campsites hosts a picnic table, fire ring, and a lantern post. There are two vault toilets in the campground, the first one close to the entrance to the campground and the second located across a water crossing near site #17. There are bear-resistant trash bins in various areas of the campground. Please do not overfill bins. Natural Features Sarah's Creek Campground is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, a place of exploration and wonder. This National Forest is rich in history and is said to be a hiker's paradise with its winding trails, scenic mountains, and rolling hills. Nearby Attractions Visitors to the campground can enjoy scenic drives when going to visit nearby Rabun Bald the second-highest peak in Georgia at 4696 ft above sea level. Continue your exploring and you can find many waterfalls to see and trails to hike. One of the longest trails in the area is the National Recreational Bartram Trail. If some water activities are on your mind the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River has fishing, whitewater rafting, canoe, and kayak possibilities with outfitter and guide services available if you enjoy your time on the river. Tallulah Gorge State Park and historic Lakemont are also a close drive. Lake Rabun and Lake Burton are great places to put a boat in the water and enjoy those memories you are ready to make. Within an hour's drive, you can spend some time visiting the city of Helen a beautiful alpine village in White County if you find yourself there be sure and stop by Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, or Ravens Cliff Wilderness for more hiking fun. While in the neighborhood a short drive around will find you at Brasstown Bald the highest peak in Georgia rising to 4784 ft above sea level.

Overview Cassidy Bridge Primitive Camp is situated in the Andrew Pickens Ranger District in Oconee County in the western corner South Carolina. The camp sits on the Chauga River, with the Chattooga River a short drive away. Popular activities include hunting, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, whitewater rafting and sightseeing. Campers: Please remember to lock the gate after driving through, do not leave it unlocked. Thank you Recreation Big-game and turkey hunting are very popular activities in the area. The camp is also a favorite of groups who enjoy hiking, whitewater rafting and fishing. Facilities The campground is open free of charge during big game (October 1st - December 31) and turkey (April 1 - 30) hunting seasons. During the rest of the year, the camp is available for group reservations. Reservations can be made 12 months in advance. Amenities include a pit toilet and RV parking. Natural Features The camp is located in a wooded area on the banks of the Chauga River in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a part of the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests.
