About this campsite

Rocky Creek War Memorial Park Camping Ground is a beautifully maintained site, nestled just 23km south of Mareeba and 12km north of Atherton. This camping spot, which prohibits the use of generators and open fires for the benefit of the environment, is operational throughout the year, graciously welcoming travellers with its open space and serene atmosphere. Historically significant, Rocky Creek was home to the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere during 1943 to 1945. The 3000-bed hospital provided care to over 60,000 patients during that period. Each year, close to Victory in the Pacific day, veterans and their families gather at the site to honour and remember this monumental victory. Managed capably by the Tablelands Regional Council in partnership with the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park Committee, the park continuously strives to preserve its historical relevance and natural glory. Directly opposite the park is the "Igloo," an entertainment theatre established in the 1940s, currently under restoration by the Rotary Club. Over weekends, informative talks are held at this remarkable venue, contributing to the rich tapestry of stories from the past. At Rocky Creek War Memorial Park Camping Ground, travellers aren't just offered a place to rest, but a journey through Australia's robust military history and natural wonders. Come and immerse yourself in a remarkable interplay between past and present, nestled in an environment that combines natural harmony and historical significance.
