Renner Springs Desert Inn is a classic outback roadhouse on the Stuart Highway, 150km north of Tennant Creek and around 700km south of Darwin. Named after Dr Frederick Renner — medical officer to the Overland Telegraph Line workers who discovered the springs by following flocks of birds — the inn is centred on a relocated WWII army hut from nearby Banka Banka Station. Travellers can refuel, grab a counter meal or cold drink at the bar, stay in air-conditioned motel rooms or pitch up at the campsite. The lagoon and natural springs continue to draw a remarkable range of outback bird life, making it a memorable break on the Explorers Way.
