About this rest area

Pergandes Sheepyards is a unique historic site showcasing pioneer innovation with its granite-material sheep yards, situated near Bencubbin, within the Western Wheatbelt region. Away from the hustle and bustle, it offers an enriching picnic experience and a step back into history just 1 km away from the scenic Marshall Rock. However, for safety purposes during your visit, please use the newer picnic table as the older one is nearing collapse to prevent any potential injuries.

The picnic area is located 1km from Marshall Rock, near Bencubbin, in the Western Wheatbelt. To build the sheepyards, Ted Pergande harvested slabs of granite from a nearby rock formation by heating the rock and then rapidly cooling it with water. The rock cleaved into slabs, which were transported the short distance to their present location. Safety: The older picnic table is unstable and near collapse. User the newer table to avoid injury.
