American River Campground sits on the foreshore at American River, on Kangaroo Island's north-east coast beside Eastern Cove and the Pelican Lagoon sanctuary waters. It's one of Kangaroo Island Council's campgrounds: unnumbered bush sites tucked through native vegetation, plus around five powered sites near the amenities block. Facilities are simple and solid — free 24-hour flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers ($2), covered picnic and BBQ shelters, and a Dump-Ezy waste point. The boat ramp is about 50 metres away, which makes this a natural base for fishing and boating on the cove, with the birdlife of Pelican Lagoon on the doorstep. As of October 2025, unpowered sites are $22.50 a night and powered sites $35 for two people, plus $7.50 per extra person — book through the council's online portal. American River township is minutes away, with Kingscote about half an hour by sealed road.
