The Pilbara is a large, dry, sparsely populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is known for its red earth, its vast mineral deposits, (in particular iron ore) and as a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna.

Burkett Road Rest Area
Burkett Road Rest Area is beside the highway, with accessible toilets and a sheltered picnic table. There is no shade here among the arid saltbush plains. Drive through configuration suitable for large rigs.

Yannarie River Barradale Rest Area
Yannarie River Barradale Rest Area is a free overnighter on the eastern bank of the Yannarie River, just west of the Barradale Roadhouse. Set in the stark reddish orange landscape, with a scattering of gnarled trees. There is plenty of room for large rigs

West Peawah River Rest Area
West Peawah River Rest Area is a free overnighter on the bank of the western branch of the Peawah River. It is a cul-de-sac configuration with a single entry/exit. There is plenty of room for large rigs. Limited partial shade.

Sherlock River Rest Area
Sherlock River Rest Area is a free overnighter beside the Sherlock River. There are picnic tables here but little else. Quite a pretty spot where you an wander along the river bank and relax in the shade.

40 Mile Beach Gnoorea Point Campground
40 Mile Beach Gnoorea Point Campground is located on a point with a 90deg angle so there is water on 2 sides. The point is surrounded by a reef, providing good fishing.

Robe River Rest Area
Robe River Rest Area is a free overnighter on the bank of the Robe River. There is plenty of room for large rigs here, with ample turning space. Single entry and exit on the western side of the highway.

Three Mile Pool Camping Area
Three Mile Pool Camping Area has a selection of shady campsites beside the river, where there is a weir and a causeway. From here you can explore the ruins of Old Onslow township.

Onslow Turnoff Rest Area
Onslow Turnoff Rest Area is a free overnighter with a sealed drive through configuration. There are no toilets here and no shade, other than the shelter over the picnic table. Plenty of room for large rigs.

Albert Tognolini Rest Area is a beautiful spot, with great views and located far enough from the road to avoid traffic noise. There are no toilets here, so you need to be self contained.

The Herbert Parker Rest Area is a free overnighter beside the Yule River. There is plenty of room for large rigs, but the area close to the river is fenced off and not available for camping.

Stargazers is a seasonal campground and is not always open. It is close to Crossing Pool, Deep Reach Pool, Millstream Homestead Visitor Centre, Cliff lookout and Murlamunyjunha walk trail at Millstream.

House Creek Bridge Rest Area is a free overnighter in a small clearing on the edge of a watercourse with good shade, located several hundred metres off the highway. There is plenty of room for large rigs.

Cane River Camping Area
The Cane River Camping Area is a free camping area in the riverbed of the Cane River, under the bridge over the river. Obviously you aren't going to camp here after heavy rain, are you.

Miliyana Campground
Miliyanha campground is a well-appointed campground next to the original historic homestead. It has 20 designated sites. The campground has a camp kitchen which includes a gas barbecue and four gas burners as well as hot and cold running water.

Mount Robinson Rest Area
Mount Robinson Rest Area is a free overnight rest area well off the highway along a bitumen access track. Located below the folds of a low mountain range, 20km east of the Karajini National Park.

Doolena Gorge Camp Area
Doolena Gorge Camp Area is a spectacular sight at sunset, with a warm glow lighting up the rusty red outcrops dotted with sparse greenery. Just down stream from the waterfall is a good fishing spot where you can catch a nice perch for dinner.

Balla Balla Inlet
Balla Balla Inlet is a free camping area with a choice of fishing from the creek, the beach or venturing out into the open water to try your luck around the reefs. There is a boat ramp of sorts, but you might need a 4WD to use it.

Discovery Park Onslow
Located adjacent to Beadon Creek and the nearby boat ramp, Discovery Park Onslow features a shaded swimming pool, camp kitchen, BBQ area and laundry. Accommodation is simple and secluded, comprising powered and unpowered sites.

Halfway Bridge Rest Area
Halfway Bridge Rest Area is a nice overnight rest area, however there are not to many spaces available.

Honeymoon Cove Picnic Area
Honeymoon Cove Picnic Area is a day rest area with a jetty and a boat ramp with plenty of parking and good fishing spots. There are grassy picnic facilities here and it is especially nice at sunrise or sunset.

Pardoo Roadhouse Tavern & Caravan Park is located on the Great Northern Highway between Broome (460km) & Port Hedland (150km).

Opthalmia Dam Picnic Area
The Ophthalmia Dam is a spectacular oasis, formed when a branch of the Fortescue River was dammed. It stands in stark contrast to the otherwise arid landscape of the Newman outback.

Coongan River Rest Area is an overnight roadside parking area. There is little here other than bins and some shade. Suitable for size rig. Level gravel surface.

Harding River Caravan Park is located off De Gray Street in Roebourne with plenty of room for large rigs and short and long term accommodation.

RIP Lookout
RIP Lookout is a barren gravel day rest area on an elevated ridge overlooking a highway cutting. No facilities here, but room for large rigs to turn around. Located at the end of a single entry exit track.

Port Hedland Spoil Banks Recreation Reserve
Spoil Banks Recreation Reserve is one of the most popular locations for recreational activity in Port Hedland’s coastal zone. The Spoil Bank is an artificially constructed sand bank.

Roy Hill Rest Area
Roy Hill Rest Area is a free overnight rest area with a gravel drive through configuration. There is plenty of room for large rigs. No facilities here, just a large flat gravel area.

Deep Reach Picnic Area
Deep Reach Picnic Area is a day rest area on the bank of the Fortescue River. Picnicking and fishing are popular. There are swimming areas at both Deep Reach and Crossing Pool, and row boats, canoes, rafts and windsurfers are also welcome.

The Pilbara covers an area of 502,000 km2, which includes some of Earth's oldest rock formations. It includes landscapes of coastal plains and mountain ranges with cliffs and gorges.The major settlements of the region are Port Hedland, Karratha and Newman. The three main ports in The Pilbara are Port Hedland, Dampier and Port Walcott.
The area is known for its petroleum, natural gas and iron ore deposits, which contribute significantly to Australia's economy. Other than mining, pastoral activities as well as fishing and tourism are the main industries.
