About
Today, the population of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is over 28,000 and is the largest urban centre in the Australian outback. At one stage in the 1890s, the population of the goldfields area was thought to have exceed 200,000 and was reputed to be a lawless wild place. Not surprisingly, mining is the largest industry in the area while tourism is also important. The Super Pit consists of a large area 3.6km by 1.6km and over 500m deep. It was created by the amalgamation of a number of smaller mining leases and operates around the clock. All workers live in the area, there being no fly-in fly-out employment here.
When the ore is exhausted, probably around 2017, it is planned to allow the pit to fill with ground water to create a lake. It is estimated that this process will take about 50 years to complete.
While in Kalgoorlie you can enjoy a guided tour of the Super Pit. North of the city is the vast salt pan of Lake Ballard which hosts the largest outdoor gallery in the world. Here you can admire the works of Antony Gormley.
But don't forget to visit the smaller gold town of Coolgardie. It has a fascinating history and an interesting mining museum.
