About
The district, which forms part of the Southern Downs, is located on the inland route between Sydney and Brisbane via the New England Highway. In addition to fruit growing and winemaking, beef cattle production is also an important industry. Lavender growing is a niche industry here which fits in well with the tourism side of the equation.Stanthorpe is a thriving country town of around 4,000 people. Around it are several satellite towns and villages, such as Applethorpe, The Summit and Thulimbah to the north and Glen Aplin and Ballandean to the south.
The historic railway twin towns of Wallangarra and Jennings straddle the Queensland New South Wales border and served as an important break-of-gauge stop in the days before the standard railway from Brisbane to Sydney.
