Major Thomas Mitchell first the saw-toothed silhouette of the Grampians Ranges while on his way to map the course of the Darling River. Before long, settlers had transformed much of the area around the ranges into farmland, establishing sheep stations.

In the late 19th century, gold was discovered in the area and before long it was a destination for tourism which continues to this day.

But the history of this region transcends the short era of European settlement, as can be witnessed by the indigenous paintings and rock art dating back almost 20,000 years.

The Grampians Region produces fat lambs, olives and is famed for its high quality wine. The Great Western district was established over 150 years ago and is home to Best's Great Western, one of Australia's oldest family run vineyards. Seppelts, Grampians Estate and a handful of others also operate in the region.
